Urban Sketchers Montreal in La Presse

Urban Sketchers Montreal in La Presse

[By Marc Taro Holmes in Montreal, CA] If you download todays issue of La Presse (Sat Nov. 12) available for free on the Apple App Store, youll find a terrific feature in the Voyage section all about Urban Sketchers Montreal!

I believe issues of the paper stay in the app for a week, so youll have to check it out soon to read the article. (French language).

The app allows for some neat interactivity, including a pop-up drawing showing before and after versions of one of my sketches and the real world - as well as a fun section on supplies, where you can click on various tools and see explanations.

The article expands on the world-wide urban sketching phenomena, featuring a gallery of some of the top sketching cities in the world. (Seattle, Singapore, New York, Berlin, Hong Kong and Paris). Have a look if you know anyone in those towns - they might have a sketch in our paper!

How To Switch to 4G LTE in Nigeria MTN GLO NTEL ETISALAT

How To Switch to 4G LTE in Nigeria MTN GLO NTEL ETISALAT

In less than a week, ETISALAT, MTN and GLO have officially launched their 4G LTE network across Nigeria. It seems Nigerias quest to achieve 30% (thirty percent) broadband penetration by 2018 might actually become a reality. Nigerians can now finally access super fast mobile internet service for the first time in a very long time. With 4G LTE now available to different parts of Nigeria, you can now enjoy the speed of broadband internet directly on your mobile device. Its time to throw your Swift/Spectranet/Smile modem to one corner. Lets get started.

4G LTE in Nigeria

NOTE
Before you think about switching to 4G LTE, you must have a 4G enabled device. The device must support band 700/800/1800/2100/2600MHz frequency. Just check the phone specification to make sure it supports the band. If you dont have a 4G LTE enabled device, you can check here for the cheapest and most affordable 4G LTE phones.

HOW TO SWITCH TO 4G LTE

MTN

MTN 4G LTe
MTN 4G LTE only supports band 800/1800/2100/2600MHz frequency. If your device supports it, just walk into any MTN office and request for a 4G LTE enabled SIM Card. Insert the SIM into your phone and text "4G" to 131. Make sure to check out MTN 4G LTE data plans and prices.

GLO

GLO 4G LTE
First of all make sure that your phone supports 700MHz LTE band. It is very important. If your phone is supported, just walk into any GLO office near you and request for a 4G LTE enabled SIM card. Its worth noting that GLO has the cheapest 4G LTE plans and the widest 4G coverage in Nigeria at the moment. Check out the GLO 4G LTE data plans.

NTEL

NTEL 4G LTE
NTEL is the only 4G LTE network that offers unlimited data cap at the most affordable price. N1,000 will give you 2 days of unlimited data. Unfortunately, NTEL is only available in Lagos and Abuja for now. To use NTEL 4G LTE, just visit any of their store and get a SIM. Insert it into your phone and start browsing. Did I also mention that NTEL has the fastest 4G LTE service in Nigeria? For the list of their stores just check the NTEL website.

ETISALAT

Etisalat 4G LTE is the simplest to switch. If you have a 4G enabled device, just go to settings and change your network to 4G and start enjoying the speed. Meanwhile, Etisalat just increased the prices of their data plans. You may want to check them out before you decide to switch.

Switch to 4G LTE

Still dont know which network to choose? Well, if you are looking for cheaper data plans, choose GLO 4G LTE. If you are a power user and need unlimited internet, just pick NTEL. But if you are looking for reliability and speed, just go with MTN and Etisalat 4G LTE respectively.

For those who dont have a 4G enabled device, I am compiling a list of the most affordable 4G LTE phones. Just subscribe to our newsletter so you dont miss out on the list. Meanwhile, you can check out Infinix Hot S or Infinix Zero 3. They are 4G LTE enabled and are relatively affordable too.

Which 4G LTE network are you switching too? Let me know, drop a comment.

FREE WiFi in Lagos for Zenith Bank Customers

FREE WiFi in Lagos for Zenith Bank Customers

Its really the era of change in Nigeria! New things are happening especially in the technology market. In May, Airtel partnered with the Lagos state government to dish out FREE WiFi at the Lagos City Mall in Onikan. The only problem was that it lasts for just the first 15 minutes of browsing, so it kills the fun. Some other small, independent Cafes and restaurants have also started providing free WiFi hotspots in Lagos. You can check out the full list and location of such spots here.

Zenith Bank, one of Nigerias leading banks, took giant steps in the Free WiFi dream of Lagosians and have started rolling out free WiFi exclusively for their customers.

Zenith Bank Free WiFi in LUTH

In a press release by their Facebook Page, Zenith Bank announced that you can now access FREE Unlimited WiFi at the premises of the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Idi-Araba. All you have to do is connect to the free WiFi and log in with your Zenith Bank account number. This means that whenever you are at LUTH you can enjoy free unlimited WiFi service, as long as you have an account with Zenith Bank. This is a very nice initiative and I hope that other banks and corporate bodies will also join the party and spread this to other parts of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, I still dont understand why FREE WiFi will first be rolled out at an hospital. Wyd? Who wants to go to hospital? Nobody, except Doctors and Nurses. :-)

We put our school fees project money in MMM varsity students lament

We put our school fees project money in MMM varsity students lament

The amount I invested in the MMM
scheme was N100,000. I was expecting my
30 per cent profit when I got the news that
our accounts have been suspended. It was
a bitter news. Being a student, the fund
was raised to pay my school fees and to
meet other basic needs. It is a great risk
but many students enrolled in the scheme
to make profit and to live a better life. If
MMM crashes, I would accept it as my
fate. I will have to look for other ways to
source my school fees. There is nothing I
can do. I will only learn from it and not
engage in such a scheme again.
— Ozadhe Russell, Civil Engineering
department, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso
A friend introduced me to participate in the
MMM scheme. Being a lucrative one, I
decided to benefit too, having heard of the
success stories. I invested N40, 000 in the
scheme. The money is for my final year
project and my feeding allowance. It will
be very painful if MMM crashes.
Considering my investment, it will be a big
loss for me. My plan was to use the profits
from the scheme to finance my final year
project and to meet other needs. I am
seriously praying that the suspension
should be lifted so I can reclaim my funds.
— Faniyi Inumidun, Accounting department,
AAUA
A friend in my department started talking
about MMM excitedly. He said MMM was a
new online business platform that credits
you with 30 percent interest of your
payment in 30 days. I said waoh! I never
took interest in it until the need to tackle
certain needs arose.
On Tuesday when the news that the MMM
had been suspended came in, I was
expecting bank alert of roughly N500,000. I
raised the fund to participate in the
scheme from my pocket money. If the
scheme crashes, it will be a big loss to
me. Just last week, I lost to an online
business called ‘coin fever,’ it all happened
within minutes. I have always known that
MMM would crash soon. If it crashes, it
will hurt me but life goes on. I participated
in the scheme despite the risks to upgrade
my life and to beat the current economy
recession. There are so many financial
needs to meet up with such as paying my
school fees, buying text books and other
learning materials as well as other dues in
the school.
— Chukwunyere Chimobi, Electrical
Electronics, FUTO
The latest investment I made in MMM was
N100,000, but in total, I invested over
N250,000 in the scheme. I got money to
invest in MMM from other businesses that
I run as a student. I didn’t have any special
plan for the money I would make from
MMM. With the profit, I would upgrade my
lifestyle and improve my life. I had always
known that it would crash one day as it is
not a sustainable scheme. But I always
prayed that my money doesn’t get stuck
when it eventually crashes. I will feel the
impact of the loss if it crashes. MMM is
not my only business. I do other things
that fetch me money.
— Martin Mundus Unakwe, Electrical and
Electronics Engineering, FUTO, Owerri
A friend of mine told me to join MMM
when I told him I needed some money. I
decided to try my luck with the money.
When I saw many students making money,
I joined the trend. I actually participated in
the scheme because I needed to meet up
with some basic school needs. For
example, when I offered to provide “help”
of N50,000, in the following month, I
collected N75,000, with a gain of N25,000
without working or stressing myself.
I basically invested in it because of the
high return on investment. In this period of
recession, it became a way out. I will say I
belong to the lucky category of investors. I
got all my money back last month before
the accounts were frozen; I decided not to
participate in it again because I was
scared.
It is hard to believe that the money of
other participants is going to be paid back.
I hope and pray they lift the ban in January
as they promised.
— Ifediora Sylvia, Federal Polytechnic, Bida,
Niger State
Someone introduced me to MMM and he
talked excitedly about it. I invested
N30,000 in the MMM business. The money
was what I made from a project I did for
someone. Being a final year student, I am
already preparing for graduation. I figured
out that before my NYSC, there are things
I could do if I have some cash. It will be
painful if the scheme crashes Against an
imminent crash, which I have been praying
against, I will move on with life. This is
because, from the outset, I understood the
risk involved.Life is all about risk.
— Tunde Afuwape, Biochemistry, LAUTECH,
Ogbomoso

Get 1gb for 100 in airtel this weekend

Get 1gb for 100 in airtel this weekend

I know some of you are still using etisalat social me with Psiphon but the speed throttling is completely out of this world. When it comes to weekend, I always makes use of simpler data plans  most especially if the network is super-fast. I suspend my normal data and just toggle around with something simple like Airtel 100 for 1GB or Mtn unlimited daily plan of N150. But I noticed a lots of people are not using this plan.

Some are saying they are not eligible for the Airtel weekend plan and I wonder how possible could that be. You can easily enable your sim to use Airtel 1GB for N100 simply by calling CC.

Airtel unlimited night plan is majorly for downloading, and its super-fast, but lots of people are not using it… Whatever your reasons might be, I’ll suggest you give it a shot or tell us why you are not using it.
Remember that you can still get 6GB with N2,500 + extra N2,600 on your Airtel sim. So tell us why you are not using Airtel weekend plan.

How To Verify any Bank Account Number in Nigeria

How To Verify any Bank Account Number in Nigeria

Let us imagine three scenarios:

1.You want to send money at the ATM, then you are unsure of the account number, you now have to call/WhatsApp/Ping the owner of the account to confirm but everybody at the ATM queue is screaming at you. You just stand here wondering why bad things happen to good people.

2. You are at the bank, you want to send money to someone, you are unsure of the account number, so you head up to the customer care section but there are about 20 people on the queue there too. *deep sigh*

3. You want to use the mobile banking app on your phone to transfer money, for some reason the app doesnt verify the account number for you, you decide its better to just postpone it and confirm later.

This has to stop. Theres a solution to all these problems. Its an app called Nigerian Bank Account Verifier.

Its a gas! The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics

Its a gas! The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics

Scientific Cat-nundrums
This week, contracts won a Nobel prize. Or rather, economists Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmström were awarded the Nobel prize in economics for their work on contracts. Their studies have enhanced our understanding of incentives by examining how contracts affect relationships between employers, employees, societies and governments.  The application of incentives to IP is broad - the innovation/social contract approach to IP, patents as performance indicators in employment contracts, and, the bread-and-butter of IP, licensing contracts.

Eyes on the Prize
First of all, a bit of background. If you are an economist who supports the selection, i.e. that the winning economists work supports your own work, then you must praise the Nobel committees choice and the prestige of the prize. If you are not, then you must highlight that the economics prize is not a true Nobel prize, as it is comes from the Swedish National Bank, and therefore is not particularly impressive. Either way, one must be careful not to be too enthusiastic about a fellow economists success, lest it be taken for indication of an emotional imbalance.

Second of all, some tips if you, dear reader, are interested in winning said prize. First of all, start early and live long so that your genius has time to be recognised. Second of all, be male. Only one woman, Elinor Ostrom, has received the prize. Third, make sure you are somehow Western, and ideally American. Fourth, become at expert at posing for photos in front of books. Finally, surprisingly, remember you dont actually have to be an economist to win; John Nash, who had the gall to be a mathematician, won in 1994.  Things really are going to pot.

Contract theories
Hart and Holmström have won the prize because their names both start with H they developed complementary contract theories. Holmström began by studying trade-offs in contracts. The classic illustration is insurance, which combines both information asymmetry, where parties in a contract do not have the same information, and moral hazard, where a party may engage in riskier behaviour because the risk is shared. For example, a health insurer has less information about the insureds lifestyle than the insured.  [Merpels insurer doesnt know how much catnip she consumes.] Once insured, the insured shares potential costs with the insurer, and will engage in riskier behaviour. [Merpel has taken up parkour, because she wont have to pay for the hospital bills.]

Hart built further on this theory by examining the incompleteness of contracts. No contract can possibly foresee every outcome and consequence of incentives. He argued that property rights help mitigate this, as they place the burden of decision making on those with the property - and hence those with a stake in the unforeseen outcomes. Harts recent work on prisons illustrates this; summarised by The Economist: "In publicly owned prisons, managers might underinvest in quality-improving measures, but private owners face too strong an incentive to cut costs, leading to conditions for prisoners that are worse than those in public prisons." These incentives apply to most government services.  A privatised patent-granting body would have different incentives than a public body (think of those renewal fee$!)

Contracts and IP
Readers of Katonomics will be familiar with economists focus on the incentives-to-innovate theory of IP. This is often known as the Social Contract (covered previously here), in which IP is a contract between innovators and society; the monopoly protection of IP provides a long-term incentive to innovate. Society cannot foresee (information asymmetry) the value of each potential innovation, so all innovators are granted the same level of protection. Assigning the property right to the innovator incentivises innovation as the innovator has a stake in the outcome and the IP system as a whole.

Trophies, by R. Oxley, CC
A goal of researcher employment contracts is to align firms innovation needs with employee incentives. Patents are sometimes used as a metric of performance. There is a large body of economic analysis on the use of patents as a measure of innovation; the general conclusion of which is that patents measure patents, not innovation. More specifically, Harhoff and Hoisl (2007) examine German policies via a large survey, and find that, unsurprisingly, more valuable patents are associated with higher levels of employee compensation.  Baker (1992) models scientists salaries as entirely dependent on the number of patents they produce (a problematic assumption.)  In his model, scientists are unduly incentivised to work on "easy" patents and therefore the employer reduces the per-patent payment to avoid overpaying. Japan has recently changed its approach to patents, making it easier for employers to own patents generated by employees.

Finally, licensing contracts enjoy a never-ending analysis of incentives and clauses. The primary job of lawyers negotiating and drafting such contracts is to align the incentives in the contract with the needs of the client.  While researching the biotech sector in 2007, I came across an interesting case. My interviewee had exclusively licensed a product on a royalty basis. The licensee instead marketed a competing product, leaving the licensor without royalties.  The contract had been used to eliminate competition from the market, and failed to align the parties incentives. Another anecdote is the use by wealthy Multi-national Companies (MNC) of reversion clauses when partnering with companies in developing countries. The MNC engages in joint research and market expansion, then deliberately causes the project to fail in order to trigger the reversion clause. Both background and foreground IP, as per the contract, revert to the MNC. Its a cheap way to expand internationally.

I invite readers to tell their stories of the odd quirks of licensing contracts in the comments.  In the meantime, Im off to work with Merpel on contract incentives of catnip producers. Fingers crossed for a Nobel!

Archeology in Mazarron Roman villas

Archeology in Mazarron Roman villas

[by Javier de Blas in Puerto de Mazarron, Spain]  I know there are spectacular ruins all around the wide World, but these are the ones that make me escape from the tourist aesthetics of these coasts to evoke moments when the Mediterranean was truly "Mare Nostrum" (our sea).
The villa above must have been built aftere year 200 A.C. and leads me to imagine a Roman family living from its small horchard and its domestic salted factory by the sea. The one below is posterior and is on a more retired hill of the shore, in the present urban center of Puerto de Mazarrón.

Sell Your Payoneer Dollars At The Profitable Rate In Naira

Sell Your Payoneer Dollars At The Profitable Rate In Naira

Hello guys!... If you use Payoneer, then you probably know what Im about to rant about Nigerian ATM machines and Payoneer dollars being withdrawn for Naira.

About a year ago, when I started earning huge dollars to my Payoneer account, I saw myself as the new millionaire in town considering the amount of Payoneer dollars I rake in every month. But sadly on getting to the bank ATM machines around me to withdraw, I was deeply disappointed with what the machines dispensed in the name of Payoneer dollars to Naira rate.

The amount of dollars in my Payoneer account, using the rate of dollars to Naira in the parallel market at the time clearly stated that I was a millionaire. But the ATM rates said otherwise. Because, the amount of money they took from my account per dollar & per withdrawal clearly puts me back to being a thousandaire.

Imagine getting paid with N267/$ for your hard earned Payoneer dollars when the dollar is currently N485/$ at the parallel market? Thats a whooping N218 being stolen by the banks from every piece of dollars you might have earned. I dont blame people for choosing MMM over them.

For instance, if you earned $1,000 Payoneer dollars, thats 1000 x 218 = N218,000 being stolen from you. As if that is not enough, they bill you $3.2 per ATM withdrawal and an additional $1 for checking your Payoneer account balance with the ATM machine after withdrawal.

You may have experienced all of this out of ignorance, but its time you stopped and sell your Payoneer dollars at the profitable rate in Naira.

==>7. Apart from Payoneer dollars, we buy skrill at a very good rate and then buy& sell Bitcoin as well.

Archeology in Mazarron A 2700 years old ship

Archeology in Mazarron A 2700 years old ship

[by Javier de Blas in Puerto de Mazarron, Spain] This Phoenician ship, "Mazarron 2", ran aground 2700 years ago, 50 meters distant from the beach, in Puerto de Mazarrón. The conditions of the tides caused that it was covered by a mixture of sand and seaweeds that conserved it almost intact with all its cargo on board, until its discovery, 12 years ago. It is the oldest documented ship ever discovered.
The original pieze continues in the water enclosed in a steel safe for protection while studying its best and safest destination.
I went to Cartagena (Spain), to the ARQUA museum to see its replica and I was astonished of its verisimilitude.
Cartagena (Cartago Nova) was an important port since the Phoenician era. When leaving the bus station I could not avoid drawing the Fortress of San Jose, one of the many ruins that can be seen in this three-millennial city.

Archeology in Mazarron Prehistorians Phoenicians and Romans

Archeology in Mazarron Prehistorians Phoenicians and Romans

[by Javier de Blas in Puerto de Mazarron, Spain] Punta de Gabilanes, this small coastal promontory between two beaches where I have been swimming since I was a child, has remains of 4000 years ago, as a support for coastal sailing. It was also used by the Phoenicians as a commercial point and by the Romans as a factory to obtain silver, from ore mined in Mazarron.
Its a shame I can not draw these ruins directly. They have been buried for their protection. At least Im happy to draw the photo of the exhibition panel and then climb a rock in front of the site to imagine what the panorama would be like in those days.
